The link between epilepsy and autism, explained

This article discusses the strong link between epilepsy and autism, with nearly one third to a half of autistic individuals also experiencing epilepsy. Studies show varying percentages of co-occurrence, but rates of epilepsy rates in the autistic population far exceeds that of the the general population. Both conditions involve very active brains and some have suggested that the two conditions share underlying biology. It remains unclear whether epilepsy contributes to autism or vice versa. Certain factors like intellectual disability, gender, genetic mutations, and early onset of seizures may influence the overlap and severity of symptoms.
