Participatory Design to Improve Generative AI (Artificial Intelligence) Accessibility for Neurodivergent Students
We are a Human Computer Interaction lab investigating how generative AI (artificial intelligence)-based technologies, such as ChatGPT, can be a more accessible tool for the neurodivergent student community. The principal investigator of this project is Professor Dongwook Yoon. The objective of the study is to empower neurodivergent students as designers of their own generative AI-based technologies through a participatory design framework involving interviews, diary studies, and a co-design session with a student researcher. Through these three phases, we aim to understand each student’s unique expertise and interests and uplift them in designing a more accessible AI-based tool for the neurodivergent student community.
The study will consist of the following three phases:
1. a 1-hour long interview session regarding your experiences at the university, including your strengths, preferences, and workarounds to challenging situations,
2. a 7-day long diary study through which you will record your everyday interactions with both technological and non-technological systems,
3. a 2.5-hour long participatory design session in which you will collaborate with the researcher in brainstorming and prototyping a system that supports your learning experience, while incorporating the capabilities of generative AI.
Participants must be at least 19 years old, and registered at the Centre for Accessibility with any of the following (but not limited to) conditions: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Dyslexia, Dyspraxia
