Pervasive Developmental Disorder

Part 3

By Dua, Vikram with Teja, Zuhra

Summary

This short online video describes some of the challenges involved in diagnosing autism. It notes that standardized psychological assessments for autism become less useful when individuals have other, co-occurring developmental or psychiatric conditions.

The video also notes that subtypes of autism cannot be diagnosed reliably. These subtypes (e.g., Autistic Disorder, PDD-NOS) were removed in 2013, and now only apply to individuals diagnosed before 2013.

The Provincial Outreach Program for Autism and Related Disorders (POPARD) provides consultation, training and support services to all public and independent schools across British Columbia.
