PEERs is the only evidence-based social skills intervention for motivated teens who may present with ADHD, Depression, Low support needs Autism, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Anxiety, or any other social or behavioral issues.

Participants should be behaviorally and emotionally regulated.

In the PEERS program, your teen will learn:

  • Using appropriate conversational skills
  • How to be a good host during get togethers
  • Finding common interests by trading information
  • How to make phone calls to friends
  • How to handle electronic communication
  • Using humour appropriately
  • How to choose appropriate friends
    Entering and exiting peer conversations
  • How to be a good sport
    Handling rejection, teasing, and bullying
  • How to handle arguments and disagreements
  • Handling rumours and gossip
  • How to change a bad reputation

The PEERS classes are broken into 14 x 90 minute weekly sessions with an additional parent debrief. During each session, teens are taught an important social skill and given an opportunity to practice that skill. Homework is then given for the week to give additional practice.

Depending on registration, adolescents may be grouped in a younger class (ages 11-14), older class (ages 15-17), or young adult class (ages 18-22). Also, additional classes may be added for older participants to include Dating and relationship topics.

Your investment for this program is $1260 and can be paid through AFU. Participants must be motivated to learn ways to make and keep friends, and parent participation is required.

PEERS for Teens is a 14 week evidence-based social skills intervention for motivated teens in middle and high school who are interested in learning new ways of making and keeping friends. Teens and parents attend 90 minute sessions through a Zoom platform once a week over a 12 week period. This internationally acclaimed program, used in over 35 countries, was originally developed at UCLA by Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson. During each group session, teens are taught important social skills and are given the opportunity to practice these skills in session during socialization activities. Parents attend separate sessions and are taught how to assist their teens in making and keeping friends by helping to expand their teen’s social network and providing feedback through coaching during weekly socialization homework assignments. PEERS may be appropriate for teens with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Anxiety, Depression or other social and behavioral disorders. Parent participation is required.

Parent participation is a vital component of the PEERS model. There is a weekly parent group, run by a trained facilitator, in which caregivers learn to be effective social coaches for their child.

Additionally, parents will help their child complete weekly assignments (e.g. phoning a friend, hosting a get-together, etc)

If you’re interested in enrolling your teen, please complete the initial online PEERS questionnaire. Group placement is determined by clinicians after initial interviews are conducted. Acceptance into the program is not guaranteed.
