During this unprecedented time, our Employment Works, pre-employment training program will continue to be offered online due to the ongoing health and safety concerns around Covid-19.
We are half-way through our Fall cohort and the program has been a lot of fun and dynamic. The Employment Works program has many participants from across the Province including smaller rural areas. We conduct the online meetings through Zoom and the curriculum is created through One Note – everyone has their own private binder which they access online. We take advantage of Zooms break-out rooms when we are working on various tasks such as resumes, cover letters, job applications, and workbooks on teamwork, self-management, and communication skills.
Our “job shadows” which have typically been offered on Wednesdays are now job information webinars and career explorations. We have had some great partnerships with Work BC, Mentorability, a computer games designer, and HR with Richmond Public Libraries.. As Covid-19 numbers continue to rise the Employment Works program will be held online again for our next cohort in January.
The Employment Work program is still focused on obtaining soft skills around employment and practicing skills such as communication, task management, organization, and teamwork. During our online cohort, the other big soft skill we have been working on is our online presence and employment-related social skills with online meetings.
We do anticipate that the employment horizon will look quite different post-Covid 19 and online meetings and interviews may be a new norm. While some individuals may not be the most comfortable with these types of online formats, it will be important to gain these skills as well as working on flexibility and adaptability in the workplace. So many employment positions are changing, and employees are expected to adapt to these changes quite readily. As unexpected changes and quick adaptability can be challenging for many individuals on the autism spectrum, we are trying to practice these skills during our online Employment Works cohort.
One of the great things about the online format is that we are able to adapt the program quickly to the needs of each individual – some are ready to apply to various jobs, while others are still nervous with Covid-19 and want to look for various educational opportunities that may be offered online.
The other great aspect of an online program is being able to offer it to a wider array of participants across the Metro Vancouver area and beyond – we are thinking big here, and would love to continue to connect with potential participants across the province, especially for those areas who are underserved.
Our next cohort begins on January 12th and runs until March 31st, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:00-12:30.

If we can share this information across the Province, we would love to have people attend the Employment Works program from underserved communities, or who may be socially anxious about in-person programs, or may have difficulty accessing transit. We are very excited about the potential for offering an online program and how we can connect to a wider array of people.
The next step for applying for the Employment Works Fall cohort is for interested parties to connect with me, and I can assist with the application process. The only requirements are:
- Participants are NOT presently on EI
- Over the age of 15 years
- Able to participate in reflective thinking and consider what they would like to work on to improve future jobs and careers.
- Able to attend the 12-weeks of the program (both Tuesday and Wednesdays from 10-12:30)
