About the Event

This 30 hour course has been developed by the Provincial Outreach Program for Autism and Related Disorders (POPARD) for B.C. educational professionals and paraprofessionals. It reflects current research and evidence-based practice in teaching students with ASD. In addition, research-based methods of effective adult instruction are utilized. These include pre-reading, practical hands-on activities, demonstration, coaching and application exercises as well as a variety of ways of evaluating participant learning.

This course is a requirement for teaching assistants in many school districts and is open to community professionals and parents.

  • Diagnosis and assessment

  • Theory of mind
  • Sensory difference
  • Social and communication skills
  • Challenging behaviour
  • Effective instructional practices

Application of Theory to Classroom practice:

  • Behaviour observation
  • Data collection & analysis

  • Teaching approaches including:
    • direct instruction
    • differentiating curriculum
    • scaffolding
    • cognitive/behaviour interventions
    • augmentative communication

About the Presenter

Kenneth Cole, PhD, R.Psych, is a Registered Psychologist on staff at POPARD and a School Psychologist in the Surrey School District. Dr. Cole has presented this course for ACT for several years and has been given rave reviews from participants.

Autism Funding

Parents who receive Autism Funding may use 20% of the total for equipment, books, training and travel costs. ACT's live events are considered eligible expenses by the Autism Funding Branch. Please pay when you register; the Autism Funding Branch will reimburse parents after the event.
