Social Skills in the Valley

Rossslyn Delmonico, Speech-Language Pathologist, and Shelley Lazarus, Special Educator, are excited to be partnering with Mission Association for Community Living to present PEERS Online!

PEERS (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relationship Skills) is a 12- week evidence-based social language intervention program for motivated preteens, teens and young adults who are interested in learning ways to keep and build friendships.

For the Learners

During each small group session, students are taught important social skills and are provided with opportunities to practice these skills through fun and engaging activities. Weekly homework assignments are given to provide learners with the opportunity to practice their social skills in real-life situations.

For the Parents and Social Coaches

As parents, you play a vital role in supporting your child during PEERS training. In our weekly parent groups, valuable coaching techniques will be provided so that you can support your teen in making and keeping friends. Parent meetings, that run at the same time as the teen sessions, will equip you in helping your child with the weekly homework assignments (i.e. hosting a get-together, phoning a friend).

Topics will include:

  • How to find common topics of interest through trading information
  • How to be effective in the role of speaker or listener in a two-way conversation
  • How to navigate through the world of electronic communication
  • How to choose appropriate friends
  • How to use humor appropriately
  • How to enter and exit conversations
  • How to be a good sport
  • How to make phone calls with friends
  • How to be a good host during get-togethers
  • How to handle arguments and disagreements
  • How to change a bad reputation
  • How to handle teasing, rumors and gossip
  • How to handle rejection and bullying (physical and cyber bullying)
  • How to handle dating
  • How to develop social skills in the workplace

Cost: $1,250 (AFU approved, Extended Medical applicable)

Location: Online
