PEERS for Preschoolers is an evidence-based social skills program developed at UCLA to help children aged 4 to 6 years learn how to make and keep friends.
The program involves 16 weekly sessions, each 90 minutes long, conducted over Zoom. During these sessions, parents are taught how to coach their child on key social skills for developing friendships. Lessons include role-play videos, puppet shows, and engaging activities designed for children. Parents also receive resources to practice skills at home through weekly homework assignments and are given feedback to enhance their coaching abilities.
Although the program is designed primarily for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), its structured and practical approach also benefits children with ADHD, anxiety, communication difficulties, and other socio-emotional challenges.
The program teaches essential social behaviors, such as greeting others politely, sharing and taking turns, and managing emotions effectively.
With parental involvement at the heart of the program, parents learn to reinforce these skills in everyday interactions. This comprehensive approach helps children develop essential social competencies while empowering parents to guide their child confidently through social situations.
