Join us on November 18th for: Legal considerations when buying a home for your Son or Daughter (when he/she has a disability) with Halldor Bjarnason
What factors do you need to consider when buying a home for your son or daughter? Often, it’s finding a balance between tax efficiency and safety – ensuring that the property can’t be stolen by “friends”. It gets even more complex in that since the 2017 changes to the Income Tax Act. as parents, the only way to ensure that the ownership is BOTH tax efficient and safe is to be dead. . . . which creates a bunch of new problems! This seminar looks at things that you might want to do, and things you definitely don’t want to do, when purchasing a home for your son or daughter.
Family Support Institute of BC (FSI) is a provincial not-for-profit society committed to supporting families who have a family member with a disability.
Learning Outcomes:
To be able to critically look at different models for property ownership: in your name, in your son’s or daughter’s name, in the name of a living trust, in the name of a Qualified Disability Trust, in the name of their microboard (or other non-profit society), in the name of a business corporation, in the name of a charity, and appreciate the pros and cons of each.
