Difficulties with self-regulation are a common challenge for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), significantly impacting learning and behaviour. Self-regulation skills at a young age have been linked to future achievements in school and life, pointing to the importance of prioritizing and teaching this set of skills. In this 2-day interactive super-workshop, participants will: recognize how common challenges associated with ASD impact self-regulation, become familiar with Shanker’s 5 Domain Model of self-regulation, apply evidence-based self-regulation strategies as they analyze case studies, create a planning tool and design goals for their students, and much more! By the end of this workshop, participants will be equipped with a toolbox of skills and resources to both structure the environment and teach skills to support students’ self-regulatory abilities.
Objectives:
Participants will:
- Define self-regulation
- Summarize definitions and frameworks for conceptualizing and understanding self-regulation
- Differentiate between self-regulation vs. co-regulation
- Recall the different stages of the development of self-regulation
- Understand how the environment influences students’ self-regulatory abilities
- Identify and discuss the 5 domains of Shanker’s model
- Understand optimal self-regulation
- Discuss operational definitions of self-regulation goals across domains
- Recognize student stressors and develop strategies for supporting students’ responses to such stressors
- Give examples of class-wide and individual strategies to improve students’ self-regulation
- Practice identifying strengths and weaknesses of students’ self-regulation across domains using case studies
- Analyze case studies and identify evidence-based strategies to support self-regulation
- Create intervention plans based on case studies
- Develop a toolkit of appropriate self-regulation interventions and strategies for specific domains
